Plenty of homes and shops around Springfield sit on slabs that are thirty or forty years old. Over that time, many were treated with a clear acrylic or siloxane sealer, a coat of porch paint or a DIY kit. Those films are invisible to the eye but block a new coating from bonding, which is why grinding comes up in nearly every honest quote.
Grinding, blasting and etching
Diamond grinding uses rotating heads to remove the weak top layer and open the concrete to a texture that resin can lock into. Shot blasting throws steel beads at the floor and is common on big commercial slabs. Acid etching is a cheaper chemical method that many professionals avoid, because it does little to remove sealers and leaves residue if not rinsed thoroughly. Ask each installer which method they use and what surface profile they aim for.
Good crews connect grinders to industrial vacuums so the house or shop does not fill with dust. Ask how they control dust in an attached garage or an occupied building.
Testing an older slab
A simple water drop test shows a lot. If drops bead up instead of darkening the concrete, a sealer or other film is probably present. Oil-soaked spots may need degreasing, heat or extra grinding, and some deep stains never fully disappear. Moisture should be checked too, especially in basements and on slabs poured without a vapor barrier; see moisture mitigation.
If an earlier coating is peeling, it usually has to come up entirely. Read about coating removal and recoating.
Repairs happen during prep
Once the surface is open, cracks, pits, scaling and chipped joints become obvious. They are filled with epoxy or polyurea patch and ground flush before the base coat goes down.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just acid etch and save money?
Etching does not remove sealers, paint or contamination well and can leave residue. Mechanical grinding is the more reliable bond for most systems.
How dusty is grinding?
With a proper vacuum system, most dust is captured. Ask how the installer seals off doorways to the house.
