Flake floors are the most popular garage finish around the Ozarks for a practical reason. The random speckle camouflages the gray haze that dried brine leaves behind in winter, the red clay dust tracked in from gravel drives in summer and the everyday scuffs that show up on a solid color.

Full broadcast or partial

In a full broadcast, the installer throws flake into the wet base coat until no base color shows, then scrapes off the loose chips and seals everything under a clear topcoat. The result is a deep texture and a thicker overall build. A partial or light broadcast scatters fewer chips over a colored base, which costs less but shows more of the base and has a smoother surface.

Chip size changes the look. Quarter-inch flakes read as a busy granite pattern; smaller flakes look finer and more uniform. Ask to see physical samples, because colors on a screen rarely look the same under garage lighting.

Grip and comfort

The edges of the flakes leave a slight texture once the clear coat cures, which gives better footing than a smooth gloss when meltwater or rain gets tracked in. If you want even more grip on a ramp or at the door, ask about adding aluminum oxide or another anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat. More texture is a tradeoff, since it can be a little harder to mop.

Flake also works well in basements, laundry rooms and mudrooms, where a seamless, cleanable surface beats carpet or bare concrete. In a basement, moisture testing comes first; see basement floor coating.

What sits under the flake

A flake floor is only as strong as its base and prep. Ask whether the base is epoxy or polyaspartic, how thick it goes on and what topcoat seals the chips. Read about polyaspartic coatings if you want the floor done fast.

Frequently asked questions

Does a flake floor hide cracks?

It hides small patched areas well, but active cracks can still telegraph through. Cracks should be filled and ground flush before the base coat.

Which flake colors hide dirt well?

Mid-tone blends with tan, gray and black chips tend to hide salt film and dust better than very light or very dark mixes.
